Apple Cider Vinegar Cures

In ancient civilization’s, vinegar has been highly regarded for its effectiveness in keeping the body healthy and youthful. It was used by the Egyptians in 3000 BC and the Babylonians. Hippocrates, in 400 BC, treated his patients with apple cider vinegar. Julius Caesar’s army used vinegar barrels for his sailors on his long sea travels to prevent scurvy and disinfect wounds. In modern times, the book Folk Medicine; A Vermont Doctor’s Guide to Good Health, written by D.C. Jarvis, M.D. (published in 1958) advocated the medicinal use of apple cider vinegar. Jarvis recommended apple cider vinegar as a cure-all. He recommended it as a digestive tonic to be consumed with meals.

Vinegar has strong cleansing properties. It can aid in relieving muscle pain from exercise, balancing pH levels (alkalizing the body), soothing sore throat, and optimizing weight. Externally, it is effective in supporting healthy skin and hair. The high acidity and powerful enzymes in apple cider vinegar is super in maintaining the health of the scalp. Use apple cider vinegar diluted in water as a rinse after washing your hair; it gives hair a lustrous shine.

The reason the use of apple cider vinegar is advocated for health rather than other vinegars, such as white vinegar, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar and rice wine vinegar, is that apple cider vinegar is commonly sold unfiltered and unpasteurized, as indicated by the presence of a brownish, cloudy sediment called mother of vinegar (consisting mainly of acetic acid bacteria) settled at the bottom of the bottle. The distilling and pasteurization processes used in commercially manufacturing cooking vinegars destroy the natural enzymes, minerals, and nutrients that give it its potency and medicinal effectiveness.

Apple cider vinegar is produced by the fermentation of apple cider. During the fermentation process, sugar in the apple cider is broken down by bacteria and yeast, producing alcohol and then vinegar.
